2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Arlington Dems Urge Voters to Reject Politics of Hate ACDC Condemns Republican Attacks
on Immigrants Arlington County Democrats passed a resolution in support of responsible immigration policies last night at their October public meeting, calling upon voters to reject the divisive politics being used by Republicans in neighboring jurisdictions to exploit the issue for political gain. “Virginia Republicans have nothing to offer the voters, so once again they’re peddling hatred and fear,” said ACDC Chairman Peter Rousselot. “The voters of Virginia should recognize these attacks for what they are: acts of political desperation.” With elections for the Senate and House of Delegates less than six weeks away, Republicans are stepping up publicity campaigns across the state. They have been facing unexpectedly strong challenges in traditional Republican strongholds, and may be hoping to use this issue to divide the growing ranks of Democratic voters. Arlington County Democratic Committee
WHEREAS, Arlington County is one of the most diverse communities in America, with recent immigrants from more than 120 countries and foreign-born individuals comprising nearly 28 percent of the population; WHEREAS, our diversity is an important reason why our community remains so strong and vibrant; WHEREAS, as noted by the County Manager in his Memorandum of September 11, 2007, during our recent period of rapidly expanding diversity, Arlington has experienced the lowest crime rates in its history, the most rapid increases in property values in its history, some of the finest schools in the nation, full employment, extensive private commercial investment and the lowest tax rate among major jurisdictions in Northern Virginia; WHEREAS, on the national, state and local level, Republican activists have resorted to anti-immigrant demagoguery in pursuit of electoral gain; WHEREAS, enforcement of immigration law is a responsibility of the federal government, and the Bush Administration has failed to effectively enforce the law and adopt responsible immigration policies; WHEREAS, other local jurisdictions have adopted policies motivated by xenophobia and political pandering – policies that create distrust and divisiveness and divert scarce public resources, thus hindering government’s delivery of essential services and the performance of its core functions; and WHEREAS, Arlington thrives and prospers with responsible policies that provide protection for its people and help to those in need, while promoting respect for and enforcement of the rule of law and the successful integration of immigrants into our community.
EN TANTO, el Condado de
Arlington es una de las comunidades más
diversas de los Estados Unidos de América,
donde la inmigración reciente proviene de más
de 120 países para conformar junto a personas
oriundas de otros países, casi el 28 por ciento
de la población; EN TANTO, nuestra diversidad
cultural y comunitaria es la razón más
importante por la que nuestra comunidad se
mantiene tan fuerte y vibrante; EN TANTO, y tal como ha
remarcado el Administrador del Condado de
Arlington, en su memorandum del pasado 11 de
Setiembre del 2007; en este reciente período de
rápida expansión de la diversidad cultural,
Arlington ha experimentado el más bajo índice
de criminalidad de su historia, igualmente se
ha visto crecer los valores de la propiedad de
la manera más rápida en toda su historia, al
igual que sus escuelas han sido consideradas
entre las mejores de la nación, mientras que el
empleo, las inversiones privadas comerciales y
los bajos impuestos colocan al condado de
Arlington muy por encima de sus iguales en el
Norte de Virginia; EN TANTO, la aplicacion de las
leyes de immigracion es responsibilidad del
gobierno federal, y la administracion Bush ha
fracazado en la aplicacion de dichas leyes y en
la adopcion de politicas responsables de
immigracion; EN TANTO, y a nivel local,
estatal y nacional, los activistas del Partido
Republicano han desarrollado una
demagogia electorera anti inmigrante para ver
si así pueden ganar algo en las elecciones;
EN TANTO, otras jurisdicciones
locales se han adoptado políticas basadas en la
Xenofobia (rechazo al extranjero) y de
distorsión de opiniones para complacer a sus
seguidores. Dichas políticas han creado no solo
desconfianza y división sino que distraen los
ya escasos recursos públicos, haciendo más
díficil la asistencia de servicios esenciales y
el cumplimiento de sus funciones principales;
y EN TANTO, Arlington florece y
propera gracias a políticas responsables que
protegen a sus ciudadanos al par que ayuda a
aquellos en necesidad, mientras promueve el
respeto a las leyes, las mismas que aplica en
su totalidad, integrando exitosamente a los
inmigrantes en el seno de su comunidad. POR TANTO, HOY, en este 3er día
de Octubre del 2007, queda resuelto por el
Comité Demócrata del Condado de Arlington: • Rechazar las políticas
prejuiciosas contra los inmigrantes, y, más
aún, aquellas medidas del gobierno que impacten
sobre los inmigrantes, disminuyendo, antes que
aumentando, la capacidad gubernamental de
proteger a todas las personas proveyendo
indistintamente: medios de salud, seguridad,
educación y bienestar general; • Felicitar al Gobierno del
Condado de Arlington por sus políticas
responsables en pro de nuestra diversidad
comunitaria; y • Extender las felicitaciones a
la Directiva del Condado por su reciente Resolución En Apoyo de los
Recien Llegados de Arlington así como su
manifiesto liderazgo en tan importante
tema.
