Arlington Democrats Announce Nominating Process for County Treasurer

ARLINGTON, Va. July 16, 2026 — The Arlington County Democratic Committee (“Arlington Democrats”) voted in a special meeting Wednesday evening to adopt the rules and schedule to select the Democratic nominee for the November 3, 2026, special election for Arlington County Treasurer.

The special election will fill the remainder of former Treasurer Carla de la Pava’s term, which ends December 31, 2027. De la Pava’s resignation became effective July 10 after nearly 12 years of service to the county.

The Democratic nominee will be selected through an unassembled caucus, commonly known as a firehouse primary.

Candidates must file in person at the Arlington Democrats headquarters (2700 South Quincy Street #228, Arlington, VA 22206) between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 24, and pay the required filing fee of $3,268.48.

Online voter registration will open at noon on Monday, July 27. Ballots will be distributed electronically beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, and online voting will close at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 9.

In-person voting will also be available at the following times:

  • Thursday, August 6, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m.

  • Saturday, August 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

  • Sunday, August 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Voting locations and additional participation instructions will be announced at least seven days before in-person voting begins.

If two candidates qualify, the nominee will be selected by majority vote. If more than two candidates qualify, ranked-choice voting will be used. If only one candidate qualifies, the caucus will be canceled and that candidate will be presented to the full County Committee for endorsement.
