ARLINGTON, Va. August 24, 2026 - The beating described by José Mejía Hernandez and the severe injuries he suffered during his encounter with ICE in Arlington are unacceptable. No one should suffer this kind of treatment, let alone at the hands of government agents. This is not an isolated incident. It's part of a troubling pattern of ICE-related violent encounters across Northern Virginia in recent weeks.

Arlington Democrats stand with our Commonwealth’s Attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti and Congressman Don Beyer in calling for an immediate and thorough investigation. There must be a full and transparent accounting of what happened, and a determination of whether Mr. Mejía Hernandez’s constitutional rights were violated and who should be held accountable. He an

d his family also deserve answers as to why they were left without information about Mr. Mejía Hernandez's whereabouts for three days while in federal custody.

Our votes this November are one of the most powerful tools we have to ensure that conduct like this is never treated as normal or acceptable. Electing Democrats this November preserves meaningful checks on federal power and ensures that our government remains subject to transparency and oversight. Federal authority does not shield anyone from accountability, and any abuse of that authority must be investigated and met with appropriate legal or disciplinary consequences.
